Why We Need Doulas!

The NC Medicare For All Faith Health Caucus is focused on mobilizing people of faith in the fight for healthcare justice. We have a leadership team meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. We also host an occasional online workshop, featuring different speakers and topics related to healthcare. If you'd like to join the faith-based movement to fight for universal healthcare, then get on our email list and share your voice with the leadership team ([email protected]). You can also attend our information workshops.

Our latest event will take place on Tuesday, May 16th at 7pm and will feature our guest speaker, Tara Owens Shuler, MEd, LCCE, CD (DONA), Lamaze Program Co-Director, who will be leading a discussion on "Why We Need Doulas to Reduce Maternal Mortality."

"The United States remains one of the most dangerous wealthy nations for a woman to give birth. Maternal mortality rose by 40% at the height of the pandemic, according to new data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2021, 33 women died out of every 100,000 live births in the US, up from 23.8 in 2020. That rate was more than double for black women, who were nearly three times more likely to die than white women, according to the CDC." BBC World News

We need to dramatically lower maternal mortality in our communities! One way we can lower maternal mortality is MEDICARE FOR ALL...of course. That's the goal, but until we get there we need to figure out how we can help women and people survive and thrive in childbirth. In the richest country in the world, women of color, low income, uninsured, and under-insured women are disproportionately dying in childbirth. This needs to stop. We join with other activists, grassroot organizers, and concerned citizens to come up with solutions to help our communities NOW.

A doula is one option that can be quickly adopted and integrated into our current healthcare system. "The use of doulas appears an effective strategy for improving maternal health, especially among socioeconomically vulnerable and marginalized minority populations." (The Lancet) Join the Faith Health Caucus of the NC Medicare for All Coalition and learn all about the role of doulas, how they advocate for their patients to receive proper medical care and treatment, and most importantly how women and people can access and afford them.
